Those are my 2 cents, at least. Plus, I think he needs that extra syllable w/ “that” for the line to progress nicely.

It’s clearly what he sings but it makes no sense in the context.
The right line to me would be Then I told him I love you, and the Devil cried
Meaning he was the first to say to the Devil, I love you. Anyway, that`s my one and only beef with this song.
